Tattoo Aftercare Instructions
Proper healing is 50% of how your tattoo will look forever. Follow these steps meticulously:
Phase 1: The First 24 Hours
If your artist applied a medical-grade transparent bandage (e.g., Saniderm), leave it on for 3 to 5 days unless fluid leaks out of the bandage. If fluid leaks, remove it immediately.
If traditional wrapping (plastic wrap) was used, remove it after 2-4 hours. Wash your hands thoroughly with antibacterial soap before touching your new tattoo.
Phase 2: Washing
- Gently wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and unscented, mild liquid antibacterial soap.
- Use only your fingertips—do not use washcloths, loofahs, or sponges.
- Pat dry with a clean paper towel. Do not rub, and do not use cloth towels as they harbor bacteria.
Phase 3: Moisturizing (Days 3-14)
- Once the tattoo starts to feel dry and tight, apply a paper-thin layer of unscented, water-based lotion (e.g., Aquaphor, Lubriderm).
- Do not over-moisturize. The tattoo needs to breathe to heal.
- Expect peeling and flaking—this is normal. Never pick, scratch, or peel the healing skin.
General Warnings
- No swimming, baths, hot tubs, or saunas for at least 3 weeks. Showers are fine.
- Keep the tattoo out of direct sunlight while healing. Once fully healed, always apply high SPF sunscreen to protect the ink from fading.
- Avoid tight clothing that will rub against the fresh tattoo.
